Compared with rail, road and air transport, tanker shipping is the transport mode that generates least carbon dioxide and nitric oxide emissions measured in relation to cargo volume. Despite the fact that more than 90 percent of all freight in the world is transported by sea, shipping accounts for only 3-4 percent of the total carbon dioxide emissions.
